Megachurches & Missions

Haha, . . . funny. Now onto the actual substance: Obviously, this is satire, which means there’s a real message being pushed under the joke. Of course, without the creators being present to clarify that exact message, the challenge becomes determining how much of it is valid and how much of it is the usual “prosperity gospel bad” narrative. But for starters, these two are not necessarily mutually exclusive. A church may take strategic steps to attract more members which in turn will generate more funds in order to have a broader impact on missions and other godly endeavors.
Another angle that we could explore is how much money your average megachurch gives to missions versus smaller churches. If it’s more (which is likely the case)—-then the Bee may be barking up the wrong tree, here.
What we absolutely do not want to do, however, is push a quasi-socialist agenda that shames the rich, and demands that they “give, give, give”—until they’re in the same financial bracket as others.
Finally, if you want a practical takeaway from this post, maybe it should be this: instead of looking to others who make more money than you to give away more—why not give away more yourself? Sell the phone you’re using to view this post on. Sell your TV’s and all the rest of your material comforts. Weigh the dilemma personally: “should I go to Starbucks? The movies? Keep my Netflix subscription? . . . Or take that money to support more missions?”
Hits different when it shifts away from what others should or shouldn’t be doing, and back to personal responsibility—-doesn’t it?
